Doug McAdams in his book Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency (1982) offer an analysis concerning the contributory factors that made the civil right movement a success. McAdams demonstrated the analytical power inherent in considering a broader range of factors that played a part in ensuring seamless mobilization of the African-American in protest movements during the civil right agitation. Rather than attributing the success of the civil rights movement to a single factor, the author holds that a confluence of factors each playing a role and riding on the success of the other. Examining the direction and organizational power of the civil rights activism for a period spanning 40 years, the author explicitly offered the political process theory holding that it is an improvement of the resource mobilization approaches.
