The goal of the assignment is determinig the orbital velocity of the Earth by measuring the Doppler shift of a distant light source (e.g Arcturus). To do this, the spectrum of the star’s light is recorded at two points in the Earth’s orbit, when it’s moving directly away and towards Arcturus. (if any explanation is needed on implementing the Doppler effect in the measurment, please let me know).
