These lines from the 2013 movie, Her, represent a conversation between a man and an operating system. The pseudo-interpersonal interaction illustrates an extreme vision of human beings becoming more connected to technology and less connected to other human beings.

As technology enhances the ability to communicate with ease around the globe and around the clock, it also presents the possibility of creating interpersonal communication barriers. Author, psychologist, and sociologist, Sherry Turkle studies the impact of technology on communication and relationships. In her TED talk, she draws a distinction between connectivity and authentic communication.

In this Collaboration Activity, you explore emerging trends in technology-facilitated interpersonal communication. You consider how social norms of behavior associated with technology use are being established and the role of the professional interpersonal communicator in assisting others to successfully integrate technology use in relationship management.

Why do humans form social bonds? What processes are involved in creating bonds? What are the costs and benefits of building and maintaining relationships? Do the basic principles of human relationships vary or remain the same across cultures?

Theories abound to answer these questions. The author of your text mentions several theories including: need-to-belong, attraction, uncertainty reduction, predicted outcome value, social exchange, equity, and dialectical tension. All of these theories attempt to create a framework for understanding human relationships. For example, the theory of dialectical tension researched by Baxter (1988) and Rawlings (1989) considers an individual’s struggle to balance opposing needs and desires. In a relationship, dialectical tension is evidenced as the partners attempt to reconcile gaps in expectations such as the need for autonomy versus being connected. Becoming familiar with some of the theoretical underpinnings of relationships can assist you in building your interpersonal communication expertise.
